[private]This week we have an interview with cartoonist Dave Kellett, creator of Sheldon, co-host of the Webcomics Weekly podcast, and co-author of the new book How To Make Webcomics. We talk for a bit about his creative process, some of the thoughts behind his work, and the new book.
Some of the strips I refer to throughout the interview:

Eye placement
January 19, 2008
January 22, 2008
January 31, 2008
Black haze under eyes
November 20, 2007

After the interview, Mark and I have a lengthy discussion about his new Modbook.

And don’t forget, Sugary Serials #6 is now in print!

  1. Matt Munn says:

really entertaining episode guys good job. I loved the questions Jerzy asked Dave. Thats the kind of interview I want to hear, an artist picking another artist’s brain.
You guys could have done yourselves a favor and broke it up into two separate episodes and taken a break one week.

  2. Jerzy says:

Yeah, I suppose we could’ve made this ep into two, but we figured that folks wanted to hear about the Modbook as soon as Mark could report on it.

And I’m glad the interview wasn’t too nerdy for you. I’m interested in this kind of stuff, but that doesn’t mean that anyone else is. We’re working on getting more creators on future shows.

  3. Lee Cherolis says:

Really great episode. I’m a big big big Dave Kellett fan so this was a treat.

  4. Jerzy says:

Dave is always a blast to listen to on Webcomics Weekly, so I was thrilled to get some one-on-one time with him like this. He’s also one of the better spoken artists out there, which made for a fun and informative interview. I’m so glad you liked it, Lee!

  5. A very excellent episode, guys. I loved it all – the Dave Kellett interview and the thorough ModBook review. Now I’m chomping at the bit to try a ModBook out in person.

  6. Jerzy says:

Thanks, Krishna! This episode definitely “kicks it up a notch,” which makes me a bit nervous about meeting the bar on future eps. Here’s hoping we can score more interviews like this one with Dave. The Modbook will undoubtedly make it into lots of future conversations as Mark masters it.

    Thanks for listening!

  7. Man, as it is that Dave has been one of my favorite cartoonists since way back in the Keenspot days (I even have his Notre Dame collection book) it is really awesome to be able to hear go so in depth on cartooning, and not just the “this is how you do it” or a simple rehash of the recent (excellent) How To Make Webcomics book. Overall this is a great interview and I’m glad to be given the chance to hear it. I’m definitely keeping a copy of it for my ‘inspirations and motivations’ podcasts. Thanks for sharing!
