Today I respond to another discussion thread in the A&S forums, which was primarily about the role of death and dying in all-ages fiction. I spiral it out to cover some general thoughts I keep in mind when writing stories that are meant to be accessible to young people.

Great episode! My only addition would of course be that kids love anything with jokes about bodily gases and fluids, and genitalia. All kids need more jokes about that stuff. Especially American kids.
We often forget, but just as much as young children are a (relatively) vulnerable group, so are the elderly, who are no longer able to keep up with the modern times. This will happen to all of us, if we live long enough.
Do you think there are similar considerations for elderly people? Text size is one, but are there others?
