Today I follow up on the last episode with some more ways I look for surprises in my characters, this time focusing on their personalities or inner lives, including the following:

  • Complexity via contradiction
  • Playing to expectations with a last-minute twist
  • Defying traditional or assumed gender roles

Is there any chance that you will do a full analysis of Avatar in the future? I really enjoyed the Saturday Supercasts where you guys deconstructed He-Man, and Gi Joe, even though I never really watched the shows too much… (they were a little before my time. I was like, five when He-Man came on TV. I loved it, but I was really young.) But that really didn’t stop me from enjoying the way you guys broke it down, and it got me to watch a few of the He-Man episodes again. That being said, I LOVE AVATAR! Its is probably my favorite cartoon ever. I would really love you guys to do that episode on one of your podcasts. So anyway I love the show, and you guys rock.
