Art & Story Alive! Episode 25

This week we talk about developing an artistic style. What are the warning signs that tell us we’re forcing a style? What do/should we strive for in developing our style/voice? Is it more important to always strive for something “original”, or should we learn what our voice is through imitation of others? Why do so many artists copy the styles of others?
We follow that up with some talk on originality. We all fear that our work and/or story is too similar to something else out there that’s met some success. Sometimes we unconsciously ripped something off. Sometimes we find out that someone had the same idea without our knowledge. Is this such a bad thing? How much energy should we put into worrying about being similar to others (in style or content)? When is it straight-up plagiarism, and when is it just similar? And if it’s just similar, why do we fear doing what’s already been done? Is originality a quality exclusive to the content of a story, or are there other ways to be original? And is originality the only noble goal available to artists?
We’re joined in the audio by Krishna Sadasivam of PC Weenies and Uncubed, Matt Munn of Zed Reckoning, and Shawn Robare of Branded in the 80s.
We’re joined in the chat by Largopredator, Tony Piro, Audra Furuichi, Jarmo, Dungeon Warden, Kevin Cross, Vicmakey, Capesandbabes, Gamegeezer, Kaiki, Wes Molebash, and Visarut. If I forgot anyone, or if I neglected to link to your website, please email me, and I’ll add it to the show notes.
